The food in this school really sucks.

Note to self, tomorrow, bring something from home, and make sure that Mom and especially not Dad, don’t prepare it.

Casually, I stroll over to my seat to talk about the hilarity with Duncan and Max that we just saw. Normally, we might just blow it off because it was somebody whose mother might clean my house that was strung up to the pole, but it was just too funny for words this time around.

I sat down on one side of Duncan, Max on the other, of course, none of us sitting on the actual seat, but on the actual table…because why sit in the seats when the view is so much better on the table? Granted, the table is probably filled with soot or dirt or something, but that’s why God invented Washing machines and mothers.

We could stand as opposed to sitting on the tables, but why stand unless you’re surfing or something else such as walking in a similar vain? The reason for the view today seemed to be the too that had helped the poor fellow taped up to the pole earlier.

Yeah, Veronica was sitting there. Nothing to look at there…well, that’s not true, Veronica is cute and petite, which is all very sexy but that is sort of balanced by the fact that she tends to be the most annoying super-sleuth on Earth, whose father accused my girlfriend and best-friend's father in my girlfriends murder.

No, today’s view, well for me and Duncan, anyway, is the sweet looking brunette that happened to sit down next to her. Okay, so bad choice in friends, whoever you are, but the view is worth it. I eye her and she me, until she puts her focus back on Veronica and I take a bite out of something that is supposed to be pizza, but they should have called cheese grease on bread.

I noticed that Max, also new this summer to our zip code with a father who is a major-leaguer in stock and real estate speculation, seemed to be fascinated with Veronica and his fascination seemed to dawn on Duncan, who didn’t seem happy with the fascination.

“So, there’s a new bella in town with a propensity to hang out with our local high school sheriff. I wonder what that means, or if it even matters? I’m thinking, suite at the Neptune Grand and very little talking already, Duncan, how about you?”

Max looked up and seemed to think that we were both crazy. He was obviously fascinated with Veronica Mars. He’d learn soon enough…or maybe he wouldn’t? Maybe, like Duncan, he would soon be wrapped around her finger except that he might not dump her out of nowhere and for some mystery reason that I still don’t know about.

I’d been around for a couple of months and even before the start of school, with some of the beach and house parties that I had been to, I pretty much learned what was what.

I had seen Veronica Mars one time and it was a brief glimpse. Everyone who was anyone, including Dick Casablancas and Madison Sinclair had told me that she was trouble with a capital T and that I should treat her like shit.

Okay, I had said, back then, but the one glimpse was enough to make me think twice. Now, seeing her all helpful with the black guy by the pole, and now sitting at the table with the brunette that Logan is about to fall over himself over, I can’t imagine why they would treat her badly. Yeah, her father blamed Duncan’s father for the murder of his sister but really…he was the sheriff conducting an investigation and so…she stood by her father? So what? I would stand by my pops in almost anything.

“The Neptune Grand sounds good enough, but I’m not thinking that Veronica Mars would be volunteering for such a trip, Echolls. Maybe the other girl would, but not her…”

I kept staring at her, trying to look away, but seriously, the girl defines cute. I can see why Duncan was with her even though she didn’t live in the 09 zip code. Duncan seems irritated, but that’s nothing new from what I’ve seen of him so far and seriously, I’d be upset if I had been with a girl liked Mars and then lost her or worse, actually dumped her.

Logan stirring the pot.

He made a comment about taking the new girl, to the Neptune Grand. If she’s hanging out with Veronica, then there’s no way that she would just fall for him because of the money.

I swear, I’ve been busted up since her death, but Logan has turned into the biggest asshole walking. If I hadn’t known him my whole life, I probably wouldn’t even associate with him. Still, he’s my best friend. I can only hope that he learns to deal like I have…which is by not going around being mean, throwing the money around.

Then there is Max, already interested in Veronica. I’d tell him that he has no chance, but that’s not really how I am. Besides, I don’t want to make it look like I’d be jealous, even though I would. I’ve been dating Meg here and there, but still feel for Veronica, and want to be nice to her, but how can I? How can I date her? Everyone knows that she’s still not dropping my sister’s death…that her father isn’t and besides, there’s the other thing, which I’m not going to talk about because it grosses me out thinking about some of the things that we’ve done.

Unlike Logan and Max, I sat down on the chair, from the table top, between them, and took a sip of my water.

“You’re right about Veronica not going to the Neptune Grand, but if you want an evil gaze, you should feel free and go ahead and ask her. As for the other girl, Logan, same deal. Go up and be ballsy…I want to see the shot-down look on your face.”

I took another sip of the water.

“The Neptune Grand sounds good enough, but I’m not thinking that Veronica Mars would be volunteering for such a trip, Echolls. Maybe the other girl would, but not her…”

“Then that would make you shit out of luck then, wouldn’t it, Garrison?”

I noticed that our cute little brunette looked over between looks at Veronica and was smiling at me. Ahh, it’s so nice to be so commanding and well-known. Alright, stop me, I don’t want to sound like my dickhead father and I certainly know that Veronica will burn me an effigy to this impressionable young lass.

“You’re right about Veronica not going to the Neptune Grand, but if you want an evil gaze, you should feel free and go ahead and ask her. As for the other girl, Logan, same deal. Go up and be ballsy…I want to see the shot-down look on your face.”

I’m stunned. Duncan actually put together a sentence on the topic of Veronica.

“You know, that doesn’t sound like the worst idea in the world and it’s always so fun to trade jabs with young miss Mars, anyway, but before I get to that and while Dick and Beaver aren’t around, Max, my mother told me something interesting last night. She said that she saw you and Kendall leaving the Neptune Grand. She swore that it was you from the couple of times that you came over a little earlier this summer. Care to dispublish that rumor and oh, tell me about Kendall in the sack if that’s the game. Please, tell me.”

That’s unfortunate, considering that the Neptune Grand is already the spot of some fine memories for me just in the past two weeks.

Logan said that I would be shit out of luck. He hadn’t yet seen the Garrison family charm on the ladies at work.

I looked away from the brunette at the table, and couldn’t help but show the shock on my face. That wasn’t supposed to get out. I knew that we should have chosen another location, say in San Diego or something, not that Kendall would go for that.

“I deny any involvement there, Logan. Yeah, I was coming out of there and she was coming out of there. The woman can flirt and I wish that I had slept with her, but alas, I can’t give out any intimate goodies because there aren’t any.”

Kendall told me to deny…deny and deny some more and since I wouldn’t mind keeping our little thing going, then I’d rather lie to my friends then risk it by giving the very hot details away. Kendall’s easy to fall for because of her amazing abilities in the sack, but it’s obvious that she knows that I have a giant trust fund and even though she’s married to money…she knows that her dear husband is philandering as well. Can’t fault a woman for trying and can’t fault her for giving me some much needed experience in case Veronica happens to like me.

This is the point in the conversation where I perked up. They had steered it away from Veronica, which was good, even though now, both Veronica and this other girl were looking over here. The black guy had come back to the table with Veronica and the stranger and on the topic of Kendall…yeah, I wanted to hear about the goods or any of the goodies.

Unfortunately, Max said there were none.

“I deny any involvement there, Logan. Yeah, I was coming out of there and she was coming out of there. The woman can flirt and I wish that I had slept with her, but alas, I can’t give out any intimate goodies because there aren’t any.”

On the believable scale, it sounded convincing enough, but Logan and I both looked at him, then each other and wondered if we needed to get him really drunk before he would divulge details.

I mean how likely was it that the two of them just happened to be walking out of the Neptune Grand together, where she was flirting with him? I’d say slim, then again, I try to not get too involved in these things, but Logan, he’ll figure out a way to get to the truth.

Some pcher’s passed by and most of their glares were for Logan, as always. He laughed it off and I just hoped that he didn’t go psycho like he could recently and hoped that they didn’t go over to Veronica’s table or if they did…that they just got it over with and didn’t talk about it. Fortunately, for me, Meg came by and saw that Logan and Max were again staring at the Veronica table. I made it a quick point to look down, feign ignorance and then gaze at her with a smile.

“My cue to leave, gents.”

I smacked them both five and then walked off with Meg.

Uhh, yeah, good job covering, I’m thinking. I guess that he’s worried that I’ll tell Dick or something. Even if I did, which I wouldn’t, Dick wouldn’t care. Seriously, he’d try to nail his step-mom if he wasn’t worried that his father would take away his trust fund.

Duncan and I shared a look. Words of a lie had just come out of Max’s mouth and there are definite ways to get to the truth, even with a friend. That is for another time, though.

For now, Meg Manning walked by and Duncan quickly joined her, leaving us. That was preceded by the thugs going by, probably coming straight from their morning jobs of collecting the trash from the front of our driveways and would be followed by the whole stealing of cars thing tonight. They gave me the ‘we’ll kill you’ look and then walked away, and the air instantly smelled better once they departed.

“Okay, so no riches about Mrs. C, so there’s no reason why you can’t approach Veronica simultaneous to me approaching the new girl.”

He gave me a look and we got off of the tables, grabbed our books, tossed our disgusting so called food remnants on the table and started walking.

“Veronica might be icy with me. She probably won’t be with you, but being with me, who knows? Be cool because she might have thrown some stones about me to the new girl.”

He gave me a look. “And just to think, young miss Mars and I used to hang around all of the time and were actually friends. Young ladies are so very fickle…”

“Okay, so no riches about Mrs. C, so there’s no reason why you can’t approach Veronica simultaneous to me approaching the new girl.”

We put our things down and before we started walking that way, I felt nervous. Veronica is beautiful. Isn’t that obvious to everyone here?

“Veronica might be icy with me. She probably won’t be with you, but being with me, who knows? Be cool because she might have thrown some stones about me to the new girl.”

I was about to say something when he continued.

“And just to think, young miss Mars and I used to hang around all of the time and were actually friends. Young ladies are so very fickle…”

“Who knows, Logan? Maybe Veronica thawed over the summer? But, I have to say, from what I’ve heard about you, this isn’t your typical approach. The way that I understand it, you play it cool with the ladies and this is so very forward and daring…”

We were about ten feet away from the table and slowed down. The brunette looked at us. Veronica turned around. Such a fresh face…

Yes and bears fly, I thought.

So, Max had heard rumors about my approach with the ladies…I wonder where he got those pearls…probably through Dick when he was over there no doubt ogling Kendall before the real parties started.

We neared the table and I smiled.

“Sometimes you just have to strike while the iron is hot, Max. When a girl looks as good as this one does, it’s pretty easy to determine that she won’t be a free agent very long and maybe she’s into the biker types. It’s hard to tell. That’s why there’s only one way to find out.”

We approached the table. Veronica looked annoyed, the new girl didn’t. Good for me, bad for Max.

“So, Mars, shall you start the introductions, or should I?”
